Help the Traveling Library buy books, share books, and train educators in and around Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala

Puerta Abierta needs $4,500 to expand its library and community outreach.

You love to read. You also know that reading requires books! 😊

The Puerta Abierta Traveling Library and Open Books Programs are increasing their impact in the Lake Atitlán region and need to buy books to share with children, adolescents, families, and educators.

You can help the Puerta Abierta Library replenish its shelves. Many books need to be replaced since they've been loved by hundreds of children and urgently need to be retired from circulation -- for all of the obvious reasons! The librarians also have a long list of authors and topics for every reading level.

Critical thinking in the classroom requires trained educators. The Puerta Abierta has modeled creative teaching techniques for over a decade and out of that experience, the librarians have developed and delivered training programs to educators since for several years.

In a region where books rarely exist in schools, homes, or community spaces, the Puerta Abierta Library is an effervescent hub of activities and learning centered on books.

These programs serve 15 groups and over 400 people in and around Santigo Atitlán each week. The librarians and teachers always need informative books and story books to facilitate their community reading programs.

In elementary schools, teachers who must teach without books appreciate access to quality, age-appropriate stories for integration into classrooms, projects, and story time.

Adolescents in reading circles reflect on and discuss the many moral, ethical, social, and personal issues that emerge in the stories of the carefully chosen books. The well-trained librarians facilitate the safe exploration of the many roles and responsibilities that will greatly benefit these future adults.

Storytime with seniors is a lighthearted space for the "abuelitos" (grandparents) from different communities to enjoy their time together. The librarians share books that talk about physical changes, such as loss of sight, diminished body functions, and other disabilities that come with advanced age.

Please consider monthly support for the Puerta Abierta Traveling Library Program. Monthly support becomes significant when multiplied by 12 and translated into Quetzales. Every dollar is appreciated, and every Quetzal is carefully invested with the goal of maximizing impact for the many schools and lives touched by these amazing programs that operate in and around Santiago Atitlán.
