Apiculture is a great sustainable livelihood for Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala!

Pueblo a Pueblo needs $8,000 to complete the 2023 beekeeping project.

The importance of investing in local sustainable livelihoods in a region of extreme poverty can't be overstated.

The bee project accompanies the setup, maintenance, and harvest of apiaries. They begin with setting up the hives with bees and learning how to use all the materials necessary to begin honey production. Toward the end of the course, the participants also learn how to extract and package honey for personal use and sale in local markets.

The project includes home visits, field visits, and ongoing group workshops. Last year the apiary course was very successful. This year they've begun working with another group of ten people and need $8,000 to complete the program in 2023.

Accomplishments from the nine hive management workshops in 2022:
  • protective equipment: smoker, veils, utensils
  • 60-pound, and 40-pound collector pots
  • 7 breeding boxes, 7 stackable honey boxes
  • 180 frames with wires and 180 sheets of stamped wax
  • 12 covers and 12 beehive tables
  • 5 packets of plastic containers and 2 glass boxes
  • 100 pounds of bee feed
  • Stainless steel extractor (Q6000.00) for use by Pueblo a Pueblo.
  • In 2022, ten novice beekeepers harvested 59 pounds (20 quarts) of honey and 10 pounds of raw wax for recycling into stamped sheets.

Examples of how your beekeeping donation could be invested:

  • One box with frames and wax: $63 USD
  • One bee suit: $71
  • One hive: $105
  • Annual per-person cost to run the program: $1,335
  • Annual Coordinator stipend: $5,279 USD
